ECONOMY NEWS

  • The federal funding freeze has hurt Montana’s forest products industry as about $13 million in funds remain locked—impacting fuel mitigation projects and contracts with landowners and contractors. Industry experts say the number of affected contractors, now about 30, may rise with the spring burn cycle while government staff have no timeline for unfreezing the funds.  KBZK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, a Senate committee held its first hearing on HB 252—known as the STARS Act—which passed the House last month and would add up to $55 million a year to schools if districts raise basic teacher pay above $41,000. Lawmakers and education officials said the bill, along with another measure that would boost state school spending by nearly $50 million over two years, is a key step to address teacher shortages and support public education.  KBZK
