Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 19th of March.
Good morning, Bozeman.
Montana State Air Force ROTC will revive its Sweat for the Vets 5K race at Gallatin County Regional Park on April 19—75% of the proceeds will support Big Sky Bravery and Warriors and Quiet Waters while 25% will benefit the Air Cats club.
The federal funding freeze has hurt Montana’s forest products industry as about $13 million in funds remain locked—impacting fuel mitigation projects and contracts with landowners and contractors.
Industry experts say the number of affected contractors, now about 30, may rise with the spring burn cycle while government staff have no timeline for unfreezing the funds.
Montana announced on Monday that its unemployment rate fell below 3 percent—about 2.8 percent and the lowest since fall 2024—while total employment increased by 200 jobs mainly in construction, trade, and transportation.
On Tuesday, a Senate committee held its first hearing on HB 252—known as the STARS Act—which passed the House last month and would add up to $55 million a year to schools if districts raise basic teacher pay above $41,000.
Lawmakers and education officials said the bill, along with another measure that would boost state school spending by nearly $50 million over two years, is a key step to address teacher shortages and support public education.
