Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 10th of October.
Good morning, Bozeman.
A new traffic light is being installed in front of the Town Pump on Huffine Lane to make it easier and safer for both drivers and pedestrians—residents say the change will reduce the danger from the old stop sign setup and help drivers entering the gas station.
The installation aligns with the Safe Streets for All Action Plan, which aims to cut roadway fatalities and serious injuries in Gallatin County by 2034.
Montana State University will dedicate a new arbor in honor of Indigenous People's Day on Monday, October 13 at the American Indian Hall.
The arbor—named after Elouise Cobell—will host community gatherings that celebrate Native American culture and is open to the public.
Governor Greg Gianforte and the Montana Chamber of Commerce will host the 2nd Annual Big Sky, Bright Future Economic Summit in Bozeman on October 16 to discuss unleashing American-made energy for affordable, reliable power—keynote speakers from Wyoming, Nebraska, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Department of Energy will share ideas on energy reliability and transmission expansion.
Montana State researchers compared soil health between cultivated and uncultivated fields near Forsyth and Fort Benton—finding a 40–60% gap in key indicators like soil organic matter.
They said tracking the gap every five years can help land managers decide which practices better improve the soil.
The partial government shutdown has delayed USDA payments and key services for Montana farmers who need checks signed to pay for rising costs and loan processing—worsening market challenges for those already coping with high land prices and cheap imports.
Farmers hope the situation will improve once government offices reopen and normal operations resume.
