Good morning, Bozeman. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 6th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin recalled how the Bridger Foothills Fire burned 8,224 acres near Bozeman five years ago and destroyed 68 structures while emergency teams and locals rushed to help. He said that the community pulled together during this hard time — a moment that still gives pride today.  KBZK

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Five years ago, Sharon Davis watched as the Bridger Foothills Fire destroyed her longtime home while she and her family escaped, and she later rebuilt the house using rescued keepsakes—including restored chairs and Douglas Fir floors—to honor her late husband’s memory.  KBZK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gallatin River Childcare cut the ribbon on Wednesday for its new Big Sky center that offers affordable, high-quality care for up to 24 children aged six weeks to three years—backed by the Yellowstone Club Community Foundation, the center uses a Reggio-inspired model with a four-to-one student-teacher ratio.  KBZK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Morgan Jacobsen from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Bozeman said the Bridger Foothills Fire caused both quick plant regrowth and lost trees that hurt bird homes, affecting wildlife and vegetation. He added that deer and elk face no lasting problems and FWP will keep watching the area while urging residents to follow fire safety rules.  KBZK
  • Drought has reduced water flows in Western Montana, drying up parts of Lolo Creek between the Bitterroot River and Highway 12—paddlers reported that streams are at only 50–60% of normal. Hot, dry conditions and low snowpack have led to dying fish, and locals worry it may be a long time before flows improve.  KBZK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local businesses in Bozeman are preparing for the first home Bobcat game this weekend as Universal Athletic reports record gold rush sales and the Chamber of Commerce forecasts a $5—7 million boost from increased fan spending. Hotel managers say new rooms are filling fast with the growing crowd, adding to the busy downtown scene.  KBZK
