CRIME NEWS

  • Jurors in the trial of Jordan Palmer, accused of shooting Stephen Campbell in April 2024, said they felt intimidated by the victim’s family—leading Judge Brown to individually question them—on Friday morning as he gauges whether the case may need a mistrial.  KBZK
  • Michael Brown, a 45-year-old suspect, shot four people at the Owl Bar in Anaconda on Friday morning and then fled in a white Ford F-150—police are searching near the mountains west of Anaconda and say he is armed and dangerous.  KBZK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Justice is eliminating its Agency Legal Services Bureau—service to be discontinued on Aug. 22—that provided legal counsel to state agencies. The department said it will retain two of the five bureau employees to assist in the transition.  KBZK
  • Montana PBS lost nearly $1.8 million in federal funding from the Rescissions Act, which cut nearly 20% of its annual budget—Friends of Montana PBS launched the Bridging the Gap campaign with a $900,000 match from donors to keep the public service running for over 250,000 viewers. This move aims to secure funding for the programs watched by families across the area.  KBZK
  • Advocates led by former commissioner Jeff Mangan submitted a ballot initiative to block corporate spending in Montana elections by redefining the powers of artificial persons— the proposal now awaits review by legislative staff and the attorney general before supporters can begin collecting signatures for the November ballot.  KBZK
