CRIME NEWS

  • A New Jersey man pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact on an American Airlines flight from Bozeman to Dallas and now faces up to 2 years in prison, a $250K fine, and more than 5 years of supervised release—sentencing will be set on November 19.  KBZK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Montana Legislature overturned Gov. Gianforte's veto of HB 643 that directs a one-time $6 million payment to counties to cover costs for inmates held during mental health evaluations or treatment — a measure aimed at reducing overcrowded detention centers.  KBZK
  • The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office deployed its Mobile Command Center at the Big Sky Country State Fair to help find lost children and respond to emergencies. Patrol Captain Brian Taylor said the unit, equipped with a 360 degree camera for all-round views, will offer public tours + be stationed near the Ferris wheel + to help dispatchers quickly locate missing children.  KBZK
  • Former Montana State standout and current Atlanta Falcons linebacker Troy Andersen filmed commercials yesterday at the Rocking R Bar in Bozeman for the Engage Montana program—an MDOT campaign to encourage safe driving. He also looks forward to returning healthy to the gridiron this fall while continuing to promote safe road practices.  KBZK
  • Bozeman City Commission will host a special presentation on urban camping at City Hall, 121 N Rouse Ave on Tuesday, July 22 at 6 p.m.—city staff will update on Ordinance 2172 that bans camping except for a temporary permit system with 30-day permits ending in October and invite public comment by email, in person or via Zoom.  Bozeman Magazine

HEALTH NEWS

  • A CDC report found that 27% of Gallatin County residents drink too much, and alcohol-related deaths and hospital visits have nearly doubled in the past decade. Local health experts and police say heavy drinking is worsening the community's problem—help and more funds for treatment are urgently needed.  KBZK
