COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A small skatepark built in 2020 by Big Sky Youth Empowerment has served as a second home for local teens but will be demolished on June 2 due to risk and liability issues on its private land—community leaders say a replacement may be built later.  KBZK

  • A Bozeman man was arrested on May 22nd for attempting to steal two vehicles in Gallatin Gateway — police said he now faces multiple charges — after police took him into custody.  MontanaRightNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Malmborg School — a historic eight-sided one-room schoolhouse off Jackson Creek Road near Bozeman Pass — teaches grades K‑8 with eight students and two pets in a close-knit setting. Teacher Alison Bramlet said the school was marked as built in 1905 but new evidence suggests it dates to the 1880s and is one of 62 small schoolhouses still in use statewide.  KBZK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Custer Gallatin National Forest reminds visitors to store food and trash safely in bear country—using hard-sided vehicles, certified bear-resistant containers, or proper suspensions—with the order in effect through December 1 in several ranger districts including Beartooth, Bozeman, Gardiner, Hebgen Lake, and Yellowstone.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke removed a provision from the House budget reconciliation that would have allowed the sale of around half a million acres of public lands in Utah and Nevada. He said preserving these lands is important for Montana— and for the nation, as a sale could set a dangerous precedent.  KBZK
  • The Bozeman City Commission denied the Boutique Hotel application on Mendenhall Tuesday because developers did not prove that a 30-foot encroachment met creek setback rules—Mayor Terry Cunningham stressed that protecting Bozeman Creek is key and said the city will update the 2009 Bozeman Creek Enhancement Plan using the Downtown Bozeman Improvement Plan to guide future changes—.  KBZK
  • A new state law has shortened the filing period for municipal candidates in Bozeman, Belgrade, Manhattan, Three Forks and West Yellowstone ahead of the November 4 election. The new window opens Tuesday, May 27 and closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 11—candidates who filed under the original window do not need to refile.  Bozeman Magazine
  • Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen urged Gallatin County Commissioners to sign a detention contract with ICE that would allocate 10 beds at the local detention center for undocumented immigrants charged with crimes — a move he said would bolster public safety — while county attorney Audrey Cromwell warned that the deal could expose the county to legal risks and harm community trust.  MontanaRightNow
