Good morning, Bozeman. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ridge View Elementary marks the fourth year of the Cereal Box Take Down challenge, started by fourth-grader Jameson Parks in first grade, as students and families bring boxes to set up a domino display for a school competition. The boxes are donated to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank (supporting local families in need), continuing a growing community tradition.  KBZK

CRIME NEWS

  • The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office has asked for help finding 15-year-old Helen Ayotte, who was last seen in Bozeman on April 24 wearing black pants, white Nike shoes, a tan sweatshirt, and a black-and-white checkered Vans cap while possibly riding in a 2022 silver Nissan Kicks with Montana plates—if anyone has information, they should call 406-582-2100 or 911 immediately.  KBZK
  • Two men, Santiago Echeverri and Andres Gonzalez, were sentenced to 25 years in Montana State Prison for their roles in a February 10, 2024 fight that left two downtown Bozeman residents stabbed—ICE detainers remain in effect pending their release.  KBZK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gallatin County voters are receiving ballots for the May election as the Bozeman School District proposes a new building reserve fund levy — a replacement for an expiring $2 million levy — to fund school repairs and construction. The measure will slightly increase taxes based on property value and ballots must be returned by May 6.  MontanaRightNow
  • A memorial golf tournament will take place on August 8 at Cottonwood Hills in Bozeman to support the Delany Doherty Memorial Scholarship for high school seniors from Manhattan Public Schools planning to continue their education. Registration opens in early June and seniors must apply by this Thursday.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana lawmakers linked two property tax bills—SB 542 and HB 231—to lower taxes on homes and long-term rentals while raising rates on higher-value properties. The Senate approved both bills on Tuesday and will hold final votes Wednesday as the Legislature nears the end of this session.  KBZK
  • Big Sky voters will decide on May 6 whether to fund the Cold Smoke project that would build 389 permanently affordable homes for local workers using resort tax bonds—helping to steer the area away from high-priced market-rate housing. The project follows two years of planning and a finalized $39,750,000 purchase of a 100-acre parcel for necessary infrastructure.  KBZK
