ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 76-year-old Belgrade man died in a single-vehicle crash (in a Chevy Colorado) on Dry Creek Road north of Belgrade on April 17 (around 9:50 a.m.) when he lost control on icy, snow-packed roads and was ejected for not wearing his seat belt, the Montana Highway Patrol said.  KBZK
  • Early Thursday morning, a family's home near the shuttered Station 2 on Springhill Road caught fire with the emergency response stretching from the ideal four minutes to 15—which officials say may have worsened the damage as the district faces funding challenges to staff nine firefighters.  KBZK
  • A 48-year-old Gallatin Gateway woman died when her Toyota Tacoma failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 191 and collided with a Big Sky Fire Department ambulance near Storm Castle shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18—officials suspect alcohol, drugs or speed may have contributed.  KBZK

CRIME NEWS

  • The Missouri River Drug Task Force arrested three suspects on April 18 for their role in a drug trafficking operation in Bozeman.  MontanaRightNow
  • Thirteen Bozeman Police officers, including two sergeants, played an on-duty crime bingo game in mid-January and although an internal inquiry and external review found no arrests were affected, several officers and supervisors were disciplined while the county attorney’s office filed court motions regarding 11 felony cases—measures that include enhanced training and closer monitoring to prevent future incidents.  KBZK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service Northern Region is hiring permanent wildland firefighters for the upcoming fire season across Montana, north Idaho, North Dakota and northwestern South Dakota. Applications can be submitted at USAJobs.gov between April 14 and April 24—new hires will boost wildfire prevention and forest management efforts.  KBZK
  • Lawmakers in Helena worked hard on final property tax relief bills as the session neared its end. On Wednesday+Thursday, committees advanced House Bills 155 and 231 but votes initially failed until senators revived HB 231 on Friday+one amendment offered a one-time rebate of up to $400 and set new tax rules for primary homes.  KBZK

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Public Health and Human Services and Gallatin City-County Health Department reported Montana’s first measles cases since 1990 on April 18th. The county is investigating five confirmed cases among unvaccinated or unknown status individuals exposed while traveling outside and now isolated at home — health officials are contacting those who may have been exposed.  Bozeman Magazine
