ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Ava Rask, a 19-year-old pedestrian, was struck on Tuesday afternoon at the roundabout on Baxter and Ferguson when a green Subaru driver paused briefly before leaving, and police are reviewing security footage (from a nearby home) and witness reports (to find the driver) in their investigation. - ➤ Tariffs of 10% to 46% on imported coffee may soon lead to higher prices for local roasters and their customers. Natalie Van Dusen of Treeline Coffee Roasters and Chad Kimm of Ghost Town Coffee Roasters said rising costs on beans & European-made coffee equipment create uncertainty about future pricing. KBZK
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montana State’s QCORE used a $26.7 million Air Force grant to purchase two quantum computers—the first of their kind at any university—to boost quantum physics research at the Innovation Campus. MSU scientists will use these computers to develop faster, more precise technology for challenges in fields such as agriculture and transportation. KBZK
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will begin several construction and habitat enhancement projects in southwestern Montana this month. The work includes installing a new boat ramp and restoring streambanks at Cornell Park Fishing Access Site along the Beaverhead River, transplanting willows and enhancing fish habitat at Poindexter Slough, maintaining Cabbage Gulch Road, and reconstructing Ennis and Valley Garden fishing access sites; these projects will cause temporary closures from April 21 through early May. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday morning, the Senate Taxation Committee moved forward several major tax relief bills after amending key language; they advanced HB 231 for property taxes (including lowering residential tax rates for one year with a one-time rebate up to $400) and HB 155 to simplify rates. They also approved an income tax proposal (HB 337 that lowers the tax rate for higher brackets with triggers for further cuts) and will send the amended bills back to the House by April 25. KBZK
- ➤ The Bozeman City Commission denied the appeal against the Guthrie Apartments project in Midtown planned for North 5th and Ballard. Community members had raised concerns about affordable housing codes and traffic near Whittier Elementary — commissioner Joey Morrison said the decision does not reflect downtown Bozeman's overall livability. - ➤ The Montana Legislature is considering Senate Bill 561 which would change the Public Service Commission from five elected members to two elected and three appointed by the governor. The bill passed in the Senate and a House hearing is scheduled for Tuesday—lawmakers and critics are debating its impact on electricity rates and public representation. KBZK
- ➤ On Tuesday night, the Bozeman City Commission voted 4—1 to uphold approval for the Guthrie housing project in midtown Bozeman, even though one commissioner and some residents had concerns. HomeBase Partners submitted a scaled-down proposal that lowers the number of floors and units to meet city codes. KBZK
