Good morning, Bozeman. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • DEA Special Agent Jonathan Pullen said Monday that Mexican cartels are using Interstate 25 as a pipeline to send deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine into Montana—warning that just one fentanyl pill can be lethal.  KBZK
  • Bozeman police said that while investigating a DUI on Sunday, April 13, an allegedly impaired driver hit two police vehicles on Main Street, injuring two officers and leaving the initial suspect unhurt—Montana Highway Patrol responded and arrested the driver with a BAC of .156, charging her with three counts of criminal endangerment.  KBZK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 10, President Waded Cruzado announced that three Montana State international students had their F-1 visas revoked, sparking worry and confusion among students who fear similar actions. The ACLU of Montana filed a lawsuit on behalf of two students—officials said no further visa changes have been reported among the roughly 400 international students.  KBZK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DEQ rejected a request to list parts of the Big Hole River as impaired after Brian Wheeler of the Big Hole River Foundation presented a study that claimed extra nitrogen and phosphorus cause algae blooms harmful to aquatic life. Wheeler said he will keep sending water samples to the DEQ — Stonefly Fly Shop co-owner Mike Marcum said a clean river is vital for his business.  KBZK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A district court judge granted a temporary restraining order against the DHS that restored F-1 visas for Montana State University international students John Roe (from Iran) and Jane Doe (from Turkey) after they learned on April 10 that their SEVIS records had been terminated due to alleged criminal records or visa revocation. A hearing is scheduled for April 29 at 9:00 a.m. in Missoula to further address the case.  MontanaRightNow
  • Montana lawmakers passed Senate Bill 433 to let towing vehicles change lanes safely in roundabout travel — making it easier for these vehicles to use both lanes when needed — while other drivers are required to yield. The law will be enforced by highway patrol and added to driver education after the governor reviews the bill.  MontanaRightNow
  • Montana lawmakers are considering House Bill 924 (the GO Trust) that would set aside over $1 billion in two years to fund state programs like property tax relief, infrastructure repairs and childcare funding.
