CRIME NEWS

  • An 83-year-old man was held without bond and charged with attempted deliberate homicide after he allegedly shot out a truck window near Happy Lane and Cheery Drive on April 5 (when three people were in the pickup delivering a nebulizer for a patient with breathing problems) and a 44-magnum revolver was later found nearby.  MontanaRightNow

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Montana State lineman Andy Austin is launching MONTANA: Photographs from the Last Best Place, a photo book that compiles ten years of his work capturing Montana’s diverse landscapes & culture. The book reflects his shift from football to photography and his deep love for the state.  KBZK
  • The Bozeman Symphony will perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Kevin Puts’ Marimba Concerto at Willson Auditorium in downtown Bozeman. The concerts are set for Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m.—and Sunday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m.—with tickets starting at $29.  Bozeman Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montana Board of Regents extended an offer on Monday to Dr. Brock Tessman to serve as the 13th president of Montana State University pending final employment contract negotiations and board approval at its May meeting. He will begin his new role on July 1 — he has served as president of Northern Michigan University since February 2023.  KBZK
  • Dr. Brock Tessman is named the new president of Montana State University starting July 1, 2025 after President Waded Cruzado retired. The board said his work at Northern Michigan University makes him a strong leader—his appointment will be finalized in May.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three Forks resident LaDonna Johnston, a woman with terminal cancer, said she fears a state bill before legislators could bar doctors from helping patients end their lives—she is set to start new chemo on April 10 and hopes lawmakers will vote to block the measure so she can continue to choose her care for herself and her three children.  KBZK
  • The Montana House, three-quarters through its 69th session with 21 days left, approved several bills that adjust state spending—such as a healthy kids bill reducing eligibility from three years to two, a child care assistance program now limited to low-income workers, and a plan to split the Department of Public Health and Human Services—with the $16 billion state budget sent to the Senate.  KBZK
  • State lawmakers proposed bills to let cities ban urban camping and fine violators after data showed Montana’s homelessness increased by 89% since 2007—lawmakers say it will give local officials more control while critics warn fines will burden those in need. Activists and state officials continue debating better ways to support affordable housing as other proposals stall.  KBZK
