Good morning, Bozeman. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 3rd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HRDC in Bozeman will host its Spring for Food Drive this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—volunteers will collect fresh produce and shelf-stable items from grocery stores in Bozeman, Three Forks, and Manhattan to support food banks facing USDA program cuts that serve 90 households daily and 2,000 monthly. The drive aims to gather 15,000 pounds of food to bolster local community resources.  MontanaRightNow

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 1, a GMC Sierra lost control on icy Highway 191 just south of Four Corners and collided with a Dodge Ram hauling a cement mixer—killing the GMC driver and one passenger and injuring several others—as officials suspect speed was a factor.  KBZK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A group of plaintiffs secured a temporary restraining order against a Montana law that limits bathroom access to those defined by sex assigned at birth—halting enforcement of House Bill 121. A preliminary injunction hearing is set for April 21—when its future will be decided.  KBZK
  • After more than six hours of debate last Tuesday night, the Bozeman City Commission did not act on the controversial Guthrie project and unanimously postponed a vote until April 15—despite extensive public input. Local residents, including longtime neighborhood member Noah Ten Broek, have appealed that they were not given a fair chance to be heard—raising concerns over plans to convert a former senior living center into more than 40 housing units.  KBZK
  • The Montana Legislature has advanced House Bill 392—referred to as the Child Digital Protection Act—to protect children from the lasting effects of profitable family content by requiring content creators to set up a trust and allow minors six years after turning 18 to have posts removed. The bill applies only to creators earning at least ten cents per view and now returns to the House after passing the Senate.  KBZK
  • Montana’s right‑to‑die debate continues as State Sen. Carl Glimm will introduce Senate Bill 136 to remove legal protections for doctors who help terminally ill patients end their lives—this legislative move comes after a Billings family suffered from decisions stemming from a 2009 Supreme Court case. Leslie Mutchler opposes the bill and insists lawmakers should not decide when personal suffering is enough.  KBZK
  • Yesterday, the Montana House debated and gave initial approval to House Bill 2 by a 60—39 vote after nearly eight hours of discussion. The bill outlines more than $16 billion in spending over the next two years and includes amendments that cut $25 million from a governor-managed contingency fund while adding funds for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks positions and two new railroad inspectors.  KBZK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Montana college baseball coach Aaron Leanhardt designed a torpedo bat that puts more weight where the ball hits—he spent a year coaching at Dawson Community College and now works with the Miami Marlins. Yankees players tried the bat in a game where they hit nine homers, and some say the bat might help players in future games.  KBZK
