Good morning, Bozeman. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bozeman is ranked as the nation’s best college town for the second year in a row by RentCafe.com, noted for its affordable and quality education at Montana State University, its well-educated community and nearby natural amenities + local companies offering career opportunities for students. MSU registered a record spring enrollment of 16,237 students, marking continued growth at Montana’s largest research institution.  KBZK

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 26th, the annual Bozeman Doc Series Earth Day Event took place at the Emerson Ballroom with a reception beginning at 6 p.m. and a screening of the Montana premiere of the Sundance hit documentary Folktales that explores human connection with nature — local conservation groups sponsored the event and hosted a silent auction with community partners.  Bozeman Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bozeman City Commission approved a $2 million grant contract with NeighborWorks Montana for the Hidden Creek Affordable Housing Development. The project—starting construction this fall and set to open in 2027—will turn an empty field behind the Gallatin County Rest Home into 182 affordable apartment units for low-income renters.  MontanaRightNow
  • A recent poll showed 71% of Montanans were worried about child care costs and 64% were concerned about care availability. Lawmakers continue to propose bills—such as tax credits and program changes—that will affect child care affordability and access.  KBZK
  • At a House Taxation Committee hearing on March 26th, Rep. Brad Barker presented two bills that ask voters if they would support a statewide sales tax to lower property taxes. HB 842 would put a referendum on the November 2026 ballot while HB 841 would add a constitutional guarantee that any tax revenue is used only for lowering property taxes — supporters praise the proposal and critics warn it could hurt low-income families — as the Legislature weighs its options.  KBZK
  • Since March 1, Gallatin Solid Waste Management District has required visitors exiting vehicles at Logan Landfill in areas with heavy equipment to wear high-visibility clothing. Customers without compliant attire can get free reusable vests until March 29 and will be charged a fee starting March 31 as Logan Landfill remains open during summer hours to keep staff and visitors safe.  Bozeman Magazine
  • Lawmakers held a hearing Tuesday in Helena on a bill to regulate kratom—testimony came from public health experts, business owners, and lobbyists who presented both its potential benefits and risks. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nelly Nicol, calls for age limits and potency restrictions while lawmakers consider amendments like an excise tax to fund enforcement efforts.  KBZK

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Grace Bible Church in Bozeman, Smiles Across Montana is holding a mobile dental clinic this week to improve access to dental care in rural communities. Executive director Crystal Spring and volunteer dentist Jane Mays say the trial run links dental care with overall and mental health—an effort set to grow next year with more volunteers, supplies, and funding.  KBZK
