GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Senate—meeting in Helena—debated two wolf regulation bills during a three-hour committee session. House Bill 258 would extend the hunting season by three months and House Bill 259 would allow thermal imaging for wolf hunting; critics said the changes risked harming wolf pups.  KBZK
  • State lawmakers are considering HB 221 to shift municipal elections from odd to even years after 2025. If passed, winners in 2025 will serve one-year terms and special elections will be held in 2026 and 2028—realigning local races with state and federal contests.  KBZK
  • The MSU Presidential Search Advisory Committee will host campus visits next week as two finalists vie for the president position—Dr. Kurt Schnier will visit on March 25 and 26 with an open forum at 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on March 25 followed by a community reception in the Student Union Ballrooms. Dr. Brock Tessman will visit on March 27 and 28 with his open forum and reception on March 27.  KBZK

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, the Montana Department of Livestock confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a backyard poultry flock in Gallatin County after six birds died in 24 hours. The department said it is the first detection in Montana domestic poultry this year and urged owners to house birds indoors (enhanced biosecurity measures are recommended).  KBZK

  • Matt Richtman, a former Bobcat, won the L.A. Marathon in 2 hours and 7 minutes and became the first American winner in over 30 years. He visited the track at Montana State recently—reflecting on the training that helped him achieve his historic win.  KBZK
  • After the Class C State Championship on March 15 at the Butte Civic Center, a video from Manhattan Christian School’s student section shows chants and gestures seen as disrespectful toward Native Americans—Manhattan Christian apologized and said it will investigate the incident while Box Elder secured a 65-60 win and a 52-0 record over the last two seasons.  KBZK
